About the third Psalm

If you look this psalm up in your Bible, you’ll see that it’s attributed to David. This Psalm was written by David when he was on the run from his son Absalom, who was leading a coup against David.

David seems to have written this psalm as a morning prayer to God. He has slept through the night and awoken to face yet another day of hardship. He knows that God has sustained him through the night, and trusts God to sustain him through the day, too. (But what about tonight? See Psalm 4.)

But just as David rises in the morning, he calls on God to arise and execute justice on David’s enemies, and ultimately deliver David.

Lyrics to Psalm 3

How my enemies increase! How they multiply each day!
And they say of me there is no help in God.
How my enemies increase! How they multiply each day!
And they say of me there is no help, no help for me in God.

But you, Lord,
You are my shield,
You are my glory
You lift my head.

I cried out,
You answered me.
You are my glory,
You lift my head.

This is why my soul can rest; this is why I rise each morn:
For the Lord my God sustains me through the night.
This is why my soul can rest; this is why I rise each morn:
For the Lord my God sustains me through, sustains me through the night.

Ten thousand foes stand in our way,
Still we will trust you, we will not dismay.
Arise, O God, save us O Lord,
Silence the wicked, for justice is yours,

Salvation belongs to the Lord.
You have given your blessing to us.
