Listen to Psalm 5

This arrangement of Psalm 5: In the Morning, O Lord, primarily uses piano and vocals. Because the song is written “for the pipes,” there’s a little bit of penny whistle at the beginning of the track. This song would work well with just a guitar and lead vocalist, or with a larger band.

About the fifth Psalm

Another morning-themed psalm, again written by David. The song you hear here is intentionally structured to follow the progression of thought that David takes:

A. Calling out to God for help

B. Recognizing God’s holy disdain for wickedness

C. Recognizing that by God’s great love, David can pray to him at the temple

B. Calling out to God for justice against the wicked

A. Trusting that God will protect those who call to him

Lyrics to Psalm 5

Listen, O Lord; do not delay.
Hear our cries for help today.
Our God, our King, to you we pray!
In the morning, O Lord, you hear our plea.
In the morning, O Lord, we wait expectantly.

For you cannot take pleasure in sin;
The evil and proud, you will not let in.
Your presence has no room for them.
You will destroy those who tell lies,
The violent ones, O Lord, you will despise.

Yet by your love, I, of all,
Enter into your great hall.
Humbled, to my knees I fall.
Lead me, O Lord, in your good ways;
Show me the path and make it straight all my days.

For we are dealt lie upon lie
From the ones who choose to defy
Our God and Judge. To you we cry:
They are guilty, O God! Let their intrigues
Be their downfall for they have all rebelled against thee.

But let the one who rests in your care
Sing for joy and not despair,
For we are safest with thee there.
Shield us, O Lord, protect your own!
Shield us, O Lord, and let your name be known.
